The varied spelling of the name in numerous sources which have been investigated, has complicated the possibility to positively identify the branch to which each of these families belong It can accurately be stated that the descendents of Johann Balthaser Hege retained the same spelling of the name Hege. Whereas the other line (Hans Jacob and Hans George Hagi) appears in a variety of forms. But does not cross over into the Hege line. H-a-g-a does not cross over into the H-e-g-e line the pronunciation of the name is different, Ha and He are clearly a different word, at the end of the name the e or y is pronounced or the a is pronounced. I think you can have a Y or a , and still pronounce it right but when you change the second letter a to an e you get a different pronunciation. For instance John Balthaser Hege Had children and named a lot of them the same names as did Hans George Hagi, Mathias Hage ( the haga Line) married Lidia Bumgardner , and Mathias Hege (the hege Line) Married Emitia Weavil First and then 2nd Sarah Walser. another instance is Charity Hage Married John Hege. and they were no Kin. I just cannot see the cross over of these two lines just to get dates to match.

Most all the Haga line I have on this page is documented and/ or is by word of Mouth from someone who would know their family history, or from Bible records. If a date of death or birth has two dates it is because the person giving can not remember exactly the year of the death or birth. and if it is one or two years that is fine, but not give or take 25,50 or 100 years. Jacob Hagi left Switzerland with his two sons, Hans George and Johan Jacob, traveling down the Rhine river to Rotterdam. They sailed from Rotterdam with Captain Charles Hargrave on the ship Dragon. Which called at Plymouth England and sailed for America from that port. They arrived in Philadelphia on September 30,1732. There were one hundred and eighty five persons aboard the vessel. Upon the arrival in  Philadelphia Johan and his son Jacob were to ill to sign the oath. This was reported.  On the Captain’s list of the passengers. Hens George appeared before a public official  in the court house where he repeated the British declaration, Pledging  allegiance to the King, thereby being naturalized. He was naturalized in 1773 and no further evidence has been  discovered. An Act was passed in session from October 1738 to May 1739 where by all protestant and reformed subjects of the Emperor of Germany and other provinces now in army with the King Of Great Britain were Naturalized citizens.

Hans George Received a land grant of 200 acres, located on a branch of Muddy Creek in East Cocalico, Lancaster Co.Pa. By warrant dated May27,1738 . On April 2,1745 He sold his rights to Michael Hamper of Chester Co. Pa.

Anna Eva Frey's sister Maria Juliana Frey The 8th child of Hans Peter Frey, Married Balthaser Hege in 1757 and shortly there after , with three other couples moved to N.C.. In all probability Hans George and Anna Eva Moved to N. C. about the same time.

Hans George Haga, owned taxable property in Rowan Co. N.C. as early as 1760. He gave a mortgage, dated July 12 1763 to Henry McCullach Esquire of Turnham Green an Agent of the government in the reign of King George III. He sold 200 acres to his son George on April 10,1765 . It was recommended to the General Assembly, Rowan Co, N.C. court house in 1765, That he be exempted from public dies and other services because of his age and poverty.

JOHAN JACOB HAGEY Second son of Hans John Hage Born in Switzerland about the year of Our Lord sixteen hundred and sixty eight. (1668) died intestate in 1758 in Elizabeth township , Lancaster Co Pa.

Like his brother Hans George Hagey he was a resident of Lancaster co. Pa. when he took up two tracts of land embracing over 200 acres lying on Hammer Creek i Warwick township later in Elizabeth township.

Here he became a prosperous farmer and operated the Speedwell Forge, that was located in the Speedwell Furnace. of William Stiegel's and the Speed well furnace of James Olds. This forge produced a great amount of the iron that made arms during the American Revelation. ,continuing in operation till about 1858.

On Hammer creek near Brickville , Jacob Hagey erected a tempory residence and later built a fine stone home there. Soon after arriving in America he married a fine lady who was Christened Frederica Magdalena, of which there were born seven children. They were all devout church attendants. and each Sunday they made their way with ardent spirit to the little church at Brickville surmounting the hill that commands a panoramic view of unparallel beauty. In this very church Baron Siegel at the same period of time sought relief from his worldly affairs. and others notables of that section as well worshiped there.

The Brickville community , beautifully located among the rolling hills of Lancaster Co.Pa. has been rightly call "God's Acre" The Coleman's, Olds, Grubbs and other prominent colonial families of eastern Pa. had established their landed estates here. On the south side of the Hagey farmstead lay Speedwell" The handsome residence of James Old., ironmaster: on the north lay the lands of Peter Grubb., Esquire also ironmaster, and adjoining on the east was the estate of Siegel, famous glassmaker , which was later acquired by the Coleman family. Much of the iron ore derived from the mines on the neighboring lands and also from those of Jacob Hagey's supplied the raw material for the various iron furnaces in that locality.

During the short span of his life Jacob Hagey took and interest in the development of his community. Being one of the chief supporters of the Brickville Evangelistically Lutheran Church. . As further evidence it is found in 1747, he ,with the aid of several other enthusiasts purchased two or three acres of land from the Sebastian Royer for the location of a house of worship and place of burial. The small tract lay in what was later included in Elizabeth township. Although the church known as Zion Reformed was organized in early 1740. The erection of a building was not undertaken till 1747., When an edifice of wood was built. It was long known as Royer's Church. and was referred to as the Presbyterian Church. of which the first pastor was Rev. John G, Witter. In 1813 it was reerected and constructed as a brick church. During the revolutionary War it is said that the old frame building was used as a hospital, and some of the soldiers that died in the church were buried in the graveyard near by.

At not an advanced age, Jacob Hagey died intestate in Elizabeth township , leaving his wife Frederica Magdalena and seven children , two sons of whom were minors. The eldest son Johan Martin by virtue of law , became entitled to the two hundred and twelve acres of his father's land, and was granted the patent for this acreage by Thomas and Richard Ran. sons of William Penn who was the at the time absolute proprietary of the province of Penn. He and his wife who died in 1775 are buried in the commentary at the Brickville Lutheran Church. In the records of the old church is recorded the birth dates and baptism dates of their four sons, but not their daughters.

He sold 22 acres to John Ford in 1778. he was appointed overseer of the road from Swearing Creek to Bushy Fork on February 17,1783. He attended the Pilgrim German Lutheran Church ,Lexington N.C. May 14,1815.. His name appears on the first Church book, in N.C. Arcives of History, with his wife and a list of his children and their birth dates. His will was written July 23,1823 and his estate was settled in January 1824. All personal property was sold at public auction and divided equally anong his female heirs, and all male heirs being excluded

He was the son of Hans George Hagey and Anna Eva Fray,  Married in 1780 to Mary Clapp Her mother and Father was John Philip and Barbara Clapp of Guliford Co. N.C. John Phillip Clapp Her father was a very substantial planter, and his will was proved in November 1798 and was one of the earliest recorded in the county. Condar Hagey lived after his marriage in Guliford Co, on the waters of Alamance Southwest of Greensboro where he owned a tract of 210 acres. By deed of July 29,1824, the heirs of his estate conveyed this land to Adam Hagey who was the son and legatee of Conrad and who was therefore the recipient of one ninth of the estate.

Conestoga Wagon

About the Conestoga Wagon, which along side the Pennsyvania Rifle , was Lancaster County's main contribution to the development of American civilization. marking significant improvements over the old world product. Lancaster County's German artisans had modified the short ,dumpy, wide, English covered wagon. Wrking along the Conestoga river, thhey made the wagon longer,and deeper with a lengthwise and crosswise sag in the middle to force the laod to shift to the center of the wagon,and high at each end to keep the load from slipping on hills. Pulled by six Conestoga bred horses with the driver seated on an outboard or astride the left saddle horse, this monster vehicle was a fimiliar sight moving along the highroads between Philiadelphia and Lancaster and on the Great Philadephia Wagon Road to the south. A leather tar bucket hung under the rear axle with tar for greasing the wheels. Think of the artisans it took to construct a wagon_ Blacksmiths, wheelrights, joiners, turners, and also the handsewn and heavy harnesses made of hand-turned leather, using a process that took eight months. and the wagon cover that was made of stout homespun canvas which was drown over the bowed peices of wood. Most teams of horses had bells ,and and the "expression "Arriving with bells on" was handed down from the Conestoga wagon period. The bells were made of hand hammered English bell metel, placedon iron hoops pegged to the hem of the horsecoller, and were used for signaling in time of danfer or destress. in case one team became stuck or disabled and another came to help, the disabled team would give their bells to the team who had aided them. If the team arrived at it's destination with bells on it meant everything had went well on the journey, We can hope that Martin Hagey and his family arrived in Virginia with "bells on"

He married Sarah Bonham on December 24,1839 In Ashe Co N.C. Daughter of William Bonham ,Sarah was born in 1806 in Grayson Co and died in 1887 in grayson Co VA. Sarah's will was probated on Feburary 8,1887 and adds Granville to the listed children of David's will to make 16 children in all.

He was a veteran of the war of 1812, He enlisted on Feb 8,1815 and was discharged on March 3,1815 He served as a privite under Robert Timothy Dalton, in Va Militia , and Marched from Grayson Co Va to Salem Va and was discharged there, He was paid $6.50 for the milage he walked back to Grayson Co at the courthouse where he had enlisted. His wife Sarah Bonham Haga filed for a claim for bounty land as a widow on April 23, 1854, She was 49 years of age at that time. His death date is listed on his discharge certificate. and his marriage date to Sarah Bonham.

He received 63 acres of land from James Parks on Fox Creek on Aug 1808, His name was spelled Heeke In The Pilgram Reformed Church Records, This birth date came from the Pilgram Church records. He bought a Farm on Fox Creek joining Owen Thomas Valued at $50.00 He resided at Mouth of Wilson ,Grayson Co, Va. In 1810 He appeared on the Virginia tax list with no slaves,three horses and over 21 years of age.

The 1880 Census of Wilson Magistral District#3 lists them as Sarah Age 70 and living with her daughter Mahala age 40 and her grand children.Joseph 17, Andrew 12, Eveline 9, William C. 6, Celia J. 4, and David 8mos.

Some researchers say his name was H Thomas Anderson. Thomas' death certificate gave the name T.

M. Anderson and parents as Thomas Anderson and Celia Haggie. His date of birth on the death

certificate stated February 5, 1865. This information came from his wife and may actually be wrong. All

other sources seem to give the year 1857. Omey may have meant to say 1856 or it could have been a typo.

 

Naomi married Thomas M Anderson who was a cousin of Celia Jane Haga, first wife of Naomi's brother

James Abraham Pennington.

1870 Grayson County, VA Census lists Naomi J 2 living with her parents.

1880 Grayson County, VA Census lists Naomi J 12 living with her parents.

On James' ECA, she is listed as Janie Pennington. Some sources list her as Nancy, while others say

Naomi. The PRA lists her as Naomi. Listed in Guion Miller Roll Cherokee applications number: 12965

McDowell County, WV between 1903 and 1905. Naomi is listed on the 1930 census as living in WV for

25 years and Staley is listed as living in WV for 27 years.

24, Etta 20, Maggie 16, Lee 13, Rosie 4, Tildie 3, Mitchie 1 11/12 all born in VA. Nancy and Ola are not

listed. They may have died before adulthood or married before 1920. There are also three new children.

They are not Naomi and Thomas' children even though they are listed as such. Naomi was probably too

old to have them. They are not Staley's children either. They probably were Lilly's. Further research is

needed to figure out to whom they belonged.

1930 McDowell County, WV Census: Lee abt 1908, Naomi abt 1869. Staley is living nearby as is

Naomi's brother James and nephews Trealy and Lonnie Pennington.

On Naomi's death certificate, she is listed as Leoma Jane Anderson born June 20, 1861 in North

Carolina, daughter of Charlie Pennington. The information was given by her son Staley. Naomi was

buried in the McClure Cemetery in Chilhowie, VA where several other family members are buried.

The McDowell County, WV Census lists three individuals as children of Naomi and

Thomas Anderson, yet Naomi would have been too old to be their mother. They

weren't Staley's children either. They may have been Lilly's. They are listed as:

answers to this dilema.

Martin's Marriage to Sarah Jane Parks, on January The 9th 1880 was preformed by Rev. Murry and witnessed by his brother Granville Haga and his wife Thursey Parks Haga who was the sister to Sarah Jane. Martin joined the 51st Virginia Regiment ,Infantry, Confedrate Army at the age of 18, on August 31,1862, at Waynesboro Virginia.March 1865 about three months before the war ended in June, Martin was marched from Waynesboro to Harper's Ferry , where the prisoners caught a train to the Union Prison for officers at Ft, Delaware Del. He was a privite and we do not know why he was sent to the officers prison. His name appeared on the Federal Census Russell County Va, in 1870 , and Grayson Co. Va, Elk Creek Independance Va, Post Office in 1880: and in Pu;laski Va in 1900. and in Wythe Co. Va in the 1910 census. He had Eight children in all. They had no children,but did adopt the son of James Floyd and Changed his middle name from Hunter to Floyd,  James Yose Haga and little Sarah Jane also acted as guardians for His daughter Rosa Belle’s Son Wiley Jarvis Yonce. Who has always used the family name of Haga, His decendents still use the Haga as their surname.Sarah Jane Ross was a sister to Dr. Ebb Ross and John Lester Ross. Her Father and Mother were Jessie & Nellie Ross.Their marriage record gives the name of her father and Mother.

June 28,1999 Sam Haga and I, James Haga were in Grayson co. We talked with one of John Lester Ross's boys. and he showed us where Little Sarah Jane was Burried, at the old Sexton farm on Panther Creek Road. Now owned by some one in N.C. Sarah Jane died in the home of Alex Hash In Fox Community Grayson Co Va. Mrs Scott McKinnon is the one who took a team of horses down to the home of Alex Hash and brought her back to the old Sexton place and Burried her ,She is is the first plot there.

  Her Mother and Father are in the next 2 spaces. and her Sister Poppy is in the .Fourth space And her sister Rushia is in the is in the fifth.

Recorded in Smyth County Va. They had no children,but did adopt the son of James Floyd and Changed his middle name from Hunter to Floyd,  James Yose Haga and little Sarah Jane also acted as guardians for His daughter Rosa Belle’s Son Wiley Jarvis Yonce. Who has always used the family name of Haga, His decendents still use the Haga as their surname.

Sarah Jane Ross was a sister to Dr. Ebb Ross and John Lester Ross. Her Father and Mother were Jessie & Nellie Ross.Their marriage record gives the name of her father and Mother.

June 28,1999 Sam Haga and I, James Haga were in Grayson co. We talked with one of John Lester Ross's boys. and he showed us where Little Sarah Jane was Burried, at the old Sexton farm on Panther Creek Road. Now owned by some one in N.C. Sarah Jane died in the home of Alex Hash In Fox Community Grayson Co Va. Mrs Scott McKinnon is the one who took a team of horses down to the home of Alex Hash and brought her back to the old Sexton place and Burried her ,She is in the first plot there.  Her Mother and Father are in the next 2 spaces. and her Sister Poppy is in the .Fourth space And her sister Rushia is in the is in the fifth.

James Yose Haga and Elizabeth ( Hash-Haulsee)Haga Are burried  In the old Cole cementary at Just above Baptist Union Church off flat ridge road. The old Cole farm. about a half mile before you get to the Church.

Two of her children Thomas and Ambrose appeared in the 1880 census in Smyth Co. And Celia was not there. She might have been back in Ashe Co then.

And she was 21 years old at that time. Sally and David were married at the top of Iron Mountain in a wide place in the road above Skull's Gap. David A. Haga died Feb.16,1910.Leaving Sally a widow again. At the time of his death they were ;living in Azen, Washington Co VA. Soon after his death the local lodge of the independent Order of Odd Fellows bought a home in Troutdale Va.in Grayson Co. Here is where they lived for several years before moving to Chilhowie Va area around 1918. Sally lived there till her death in 1962.She was a women who wasted nothing If someone gave her a ground hog, she would cook the meat andrender out the lard to make soap.and tan the hide to make shoe strings.She lived on very little but seemed to enjoy life.

The quiet prayer of Noah Melvin Haga stretched across the years,down throught time, and unlocked the hearts of many of his descendants. In 1906, on Caloway's Cherokee application, he lists Malinda Pennington age 30 - her birthdate would have been about 1876. Sarah Malinda's grave is at Azen Cemetery, Konnarock, VA.

Sarah had a stroke when Lucy Bell was very small. The stroke left one side of her body paralized (right side - arm and leg). It was believed that the stroke damaged her heart as she later died from heart failure. Lucy Bell was raised by her older sisters.

Delilah's sister Celia married Uriah's first cousin James A. Pennington. Delilah died eight days after

giving birth to General Lee. It was probably due to complications after giving birth.

 

Delilah married Andrew Uriah Pennington son of Hiram Pennington and Margaret Huffman about 1888 in Virginia. Andrew was born on 26 Apr 1867 in Grayson County, VA. He died on 19 Jul 1952 in Helen, Raleigh, WV. He was buried on 22 Jul 1952 in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, Beckley, Raleigh, WV.

Uriah married Deliliah E Haga about 1888. Sadly Delilah died shortly after giving birth to the couple's second

child in 1891. That child, General Lee, died only a couple months later. Within about a year, Uriah

married Ardelia Hayes whose sister Sena married Uriah's first cousin James Abraham Pennington after

his divorce from Celia J Haga around 1908. Some sources list his birth date as April 26, 1868 and death

date as July 10, 1952. His Voter Reg. and death certificate state 1867. Uriah and family moved to McDowell

County, WV sometime before 1920 where he became a miner along with several of his sons. He is listed

on the 1920 census there living in the houshold of his first cousin James Abraham Pennington. He was

accompanied by his wife Ardelia and five of his children. After Ardelia died in 1928, Uriah married a third

time, this time to a woman named Mamie Vaughan. They moved to Raleigh County, WV where he spent

the rest of his life and had several more children.

Sarah had a stroke when Lucy Bell was very small. The stroke left one side of her body paralized (right side - arm and leg). It was believed that the stroke damaged her heart as she later died from heart failure. Lucy Bell was raised by her older sisters.

Home is where the heart is; My Dad Built our house at what is now 613 Golsby Ave in Marion Va. in 1923/24 I was born in that same house on July 28,1925 My Grand father Noah Melvin Haga had deeded land to three of his sons on Lincoln Hill to build a house on. My dad was one of them and Herman Haga was another one but I can not recall who the other one was. Anyway this is the only one that is still in the family, When mother died I bought the house and was going to live in it , but when my sister's husband Ernest (DeadEye) Cline died I sold it to her and she still lives there today. April 2001.

This is where we lived as far back as I can remember, We moved a couple of times to West Virginia, but always came back here to live. My Mother's father and Mother lived in West Virginia where Grand dad Kegley, worked in the mines. and so Dad thought he could make a better living there and we moved to Kimball .West Virginia, and he died in the Welch Hospital. on March 26,1937.

After dad died we moved back to Marion to the home place and mom never married or moved again till she moved to her Home in Heaven on March 30, 1991. They both died on Good Friday and was buried on Easter Sunday. From 1937 till we grew up and whet into the service, we lived on welfare, it was hard back then for a women with seven children to make a living. It was only by God's Grace that we didn't starve to death, But God is Merciful.

The house was only two rooms at that time, we boys built the two back rooms on to the house during world war II. Connie was born after Dad died June 2,1937. and later went to live with Wiley J Haga in N.Y. He was supposed to adopt her but he never did, Right after she went to live with him they had a son of their own and they never did get around to the adoption. Helen then just a little over a year old went to live with uncle Cecil Haga in Kingsport Tenn. and she was adopted by Him.

My grandmother Margaret Malinda Walls Haga died on February 28,1937 and was buried in Grayson Co Va , We lived in West Va at the time and dad did not have money or means to bring the whole family to her funeral, So he hitch hiked from West Va to Marion in a Snow storm to be at her funeral and was exposed to wet and cold whether, This left him with a cold that progressed into the flu. Although he tried to go back to work His condition soon turned to pneumonia that later resulted in his death on March 26,1937

While living in Marion Va, Dad worked at the Lincoln Furniture Factory down on the Holston River. It just burned a few years back. He went to work with Willard Lincoln in the mill that was on Middle fork Holston River. At one time he had obtained employment with the Eastman co. in Kingsport Tenn. But he did not like the swing shift so he Resigned and went to work in the mines, in West Virginia. I just vaguely remember the move to West Va, I remember riding the back of and old stake body truck across the mountains to Bluefield West Va.

I remember the time when Dad worked at the factory before he went to the mill with Willard Lincoln, He fired the old Boiler that they used for power back then , It sat in a Brick building where there is a park being made now by the town of Marion. He worked the second shift and every night at 7:00 mom would fix his lunch and I would take it to him Back then that was a long walk down over that hill, as I drive it today sometimes I think of all the times I walked up and down that hill back then. I used to crawl back under that boiler and sleep on a quilt till dad would get off work and then walk home with him.

One night he was poking up the fire with a piece of hollow pipe and it got hot and must have been stopped up with dirt, and it blew out and just about put his eyes out, he was off from work for about two weeks , I used to sit by his bed a and roll his cigarettes for him out of "BULL DURHAM" tobacco.

I was eleven years old when dad died , but by that time he had already put the fear of God in my life, at eleven he made sure I knew right from wrong. I don't know that my dad ever made a profession of faith to any religion But my granddad was a preacher and He was Sunday School Suppertendent at Burtons Chapel on flat Ridge Va, in Grayson C, He is buried there. I hope dad is in Heaven, But I thank God for a father who had some morals about him. He was raised right and he raised his children right. I remember the last whipping I got from Him, It was five days before he died , He was sick in bed , at home just before they took him to the Hospital . He had gotten me and My brothers a stake bed wagon for Christmas that year and he raised up and looked out the window just in time to see me holding onto the back bumper of a car and letting it pull me up the hill in front of the house in Kimball West Va. He called me to come up there and he took his belt and taught me never to do that again. ,That was the last time I saw my dad alive. If we had some Dads and leather belts in our schools today we would not be having the problems of school shootings and such.

As a youth Herman attended the little one room school next to Burton's Chapel Church on Hickory Ridge in Grayson Co. Va. and worked with his father and brothers on the family fram. During the First World War, he along with Cecil, Ottie and our cousin Wiley went to Akron Ohio to workin the rubber plants there. I beleive that he and Ottis were the only ones to saty there for any length of time. About this time, so i have been told Herman got his call to the military service. but the war ended before his date to report. At this point the family had moved from Hickory Ridge to Teas Va, and from there they moved to the farm in Marion Va. Dad and Mam deeded land to three of the Boys, Herman , Cecil, and Troy On which each built a house. Troy's daughter Dorothy still holds title toThe land that Troy owned. When most of the Farm land was lost to crediters, Herman must have went to work at the southwestern State Hospital, for I don't remember ever hearing of him working anywhere elsebefore he moved to Kingsport Tn. where he went to work for Tenn. Eastman Co. He also bought land in Gravely Community and built a house there. He along withWalter and Cecil bought some western Horses with which they planned to farmtheir combined lands. Herman was bitten by a tick from one of the horses and developed Rocky Mt Spotted Fever, and never recovered from it. After his death the family moved back to Marion Va., The children grew up there and I beleive all but Herman Jr , married locally and still live in the erea. Buddy since finishing school has worked for sears stores and made his home in Jacksonville N.C.

Cecil (called Shorty by most of his friends) was one of the boys that went to Akron Ohio to work during WWI . After his return to Marion he went to work in the Lincoln funiture factory.Shorty after his marriage to Louvenia Wolfe he built a house on a peice of ground that his father had deeded him. About this time his brother George had gone to Kingsport ,Tn and was working for Tenn, eastman . He encouraged Cecil to come to Kingsport and work for that same company. This was most likely in the late 20's . Cecil started out in the band mill or lumber mill section of the company. He was a foreman in the planning mill section for a number of years, when this operation was scaled back, due to the reduction of use of it's prodict by the company. Cecil worked in the general plant maintance untill his retirement in the early 1960. Very soon after coming to Kingsport ,Cecil set up a woodworking shop at his home in which made funiture, some of times with the help of his brithers Walter and Otis. When he moved to the home on Horse Creek or what is now South Wilcox Ave. He continued with the shop untill his death.

Ottis was one of the boys that went to Alron Ohio, to work during WW-1. After he returned home he went to work at the Southwestern State Hospital in Marion Va.Driving a team on the farm. He followed George and Cecil to Kingsport Tenn, and started to work for Eastman CO.. He started in the lumber or band mill where Cecil was working, Ottis was one of the night security forces, but he soontransfered to the shops and spent most his time with the company in the shop milling large cooper castings for use in the Rochester plant in New York. while thus employed his lungs became infected with cooper dust and he was digmosed as having T.B.andwas admitted to the sanitotium at Greenville Tn. Dr Waterman of Knoxville did not think he had TB after several tests wanted to do an operation. This proved to be a good thing for they found Slim's trouble to abscesses caused by the cooper dust.After removing two lobesof the lung and inplanting tubes to keep the cavities drained Otis recovered and for several years worked as a carpenter in Kingsport and southwest Virginia areas. I beleive he was the first of the boys to go to Florida to work ther.Here he continued in the carpenter trade.He entered the hospital in Jacksonville Fla in March of 1965 to have the last tube removed from his back and while there in the hospital died from a brain tumor.

George Norman Haga , The fourth son of Noah and Maggie Haga , was not old enough to

follow the three older boys to Akron Ohio to work during the first world war. He stayed on the Farm with the family for a while and then started working at a tannery or extract plant near the home in Teas Virginia. Here he started in an occupation that was to be his field of work for most of his life.That was steam power. After the war was over and the family had moved to Marion Va.He soon went to Kingsport Tn. where he heard that a good company was starting up that might be a good place to work, that being the Tenn,Eastman Company He worked fro them for over twenty years.

Soon after leaving the Eastman Company he enlisted in the Navy, Here he was also assigned to the power and electrical departments , He was assigned to duty on the Aircraft Carrier Bunker Hill and was on board when the ship was dive bombed by two Japnese sucide planes that infected great damage to the ship and it's personnal There were 264 wonded and he was one of them and there was 392 dead or missing. When the ship returned to port at the Navel yards a Bremerton Washington for repairs , George was given a leave and returned to Kingsport for a while with his second wife Tilda, whom he meet and married soon after enlisting in the navy.

After the war he went to work with Celenese Company in Narrows Virginia , again in his special capacity as a steam power operator. He started with them in the Supervisory role and continued with them for about fifteen years. He then went to Roanoke Va, and took a job as maintance supervisor with the company that owned the Virginia Theater, again he was mainly concerned with the operation of the power departments.

Upon retiring from this company he still worked with them as his social security would permit. until hois death on Dec 25,1972 .He was the first of the boys to die on Christmas Day, Elmer was the second. in 1990

Walter was born on Hickory Ridge in Grayson Co Va. He attended the one room school at Burton's Chapel. for about five or six years. The teacher was Mr. John Ross. I Believe , He always like to tell of the time when he and some of the older boys were sledding a load of beans down shinbone road off the ridge and the oxen became excited and turned the sled over spilling the beans. Another off his favorite stories was about he and the older boys driving the family livestock over the mountain and down by the town spring to the farm that dad had bought from Mr. Groselose , in Smyth co, Walter was then about twelve years of age. After the family settled in Marion , when Walter became old enough he went to work for the Lincoln Furniture Factory and worked there untill he moved to Tennessee in the early 30's . On moving to Kingsport he went to work for Eastman company in the planning mill where his brother shorty worked Most of his time was spent in the planning mill he actually worked in what was tearmed the box factory making boxes in which the company shipp the products it made in. which was mostly acetate yarn fibers.

In the late 1930s he bought some acreage in Gravely community from the Kingsport Improvement Co and moved his family into the old log home that was on the farm. When this burned he built the house that is still there and in which was home to him untill his death . His wife Millie stayed there until ill health forced her to make her home with her son Lawrence (Tony)

Notes for Elmer Howard Haga:

Elmer , when he was old enough to enter public works, went to West Virginia and took a job in the coal mines. Being very dissatisfied there he quit and returned to Marion. In his pursuit of work ,He went to Pulaski VA. and took a job in a furniture factory. It was while working there that he suffered the accident to his hand which resulted in the stiff and deformed fingers on his right hand. After this injury to his hand he seemed to turn to farming as a lively hood. He farmed on the shares for some of the large land owners and at other times worked for an daily wages. The Fries tobacco Corp. that I can remember working for, Elmer took a job with Bob Horne to cut a half acre of tobacco for eight dollars and got me to help.He also migrated to Tennessee in the early 1930's and was going to farm for Shorty and maybe Herman and Walter. After Herman died of Rocky Mountain fever Contacted from one of the western horses , Shorty got rid of the horses and decided not to farm on a big scale. Elmer then went to work in a cabinet shop of I.F. Thaxton. He bought lots in the J.R. Pierce subdivision and built a house there. He lived there till WWII was over and bought a farm near Nicklesville Va. When he let his daughter, Margaret and her husband , have this farm , he moved to Jacksonville Beach Fla. and went to work for the contractor that Blain and Slim(Ottis) was working for. Having bought some lots in a subdivision near palatka Fla. he built a house there and this is where he lived after he retired in Fla. About 1989 his health and that of Bonnie was getting to be very bad, he moved back to Scott county,Va. near his daughter Mozzella Lucas. Elmer passed away on Christmas Day 1990, and Bonnie died on May 12,1992. Both are buried in the Lucas Cemetery on the property owned by their Daughter

Elmer Having always enjoyed working with honey bees, He maintained a large number of stands ,as he called them, while he was able to work. He kept these bees in large orange groves in that area until a couple of severe winters killed the orange groves.

Tom attended public schools in Marion Virginia, About 1931-32 while his father was off sick he work at the Southwestern Satate Hospital in hs place. When his father got better and went back to work, Tom was kept on as releif for others who were sick and was later hired as a full time employee.

In 1935 he went to Knigsport Tn. and was hired as an employee at Eastman Company. He started working in the band mill. At the urging of his brother George he soon transfered to the power department. Through study with international Correspondance schools and night class there in Kingsport he soon became proficient in the field of steam power operation. This enabled him to advance in this field with the Eastman Company untill he became General Foreman, a position he held until he retired.

The first home owned by this family was on Miller Street,in the Oak Grove Community. This is now a part of the city of Kingsport. This home was also close to the Bethel Presbyterian Church, and is still the home church of this family.

In Sports, he has always liked fishing and golf and Maybe not in that order He also like the sport of fighting game cocks But has not pursued that one for some time since it is prohibited by law .

Blain was educated in the public schools of Marion Virginia.He was employed as a deliver truck driver for a while.after he moved to Kingsport Tenn. he worked in I.F.Thaxton's cabinet shop, and again drove a truck for a while hauling coal into Kingsport. He built a small home in the J.R. Pierice sub-division and lived there while he worked at the building of the Holston Defence Plant.  He then  was enlisted  in the U.S, Army. and having taken his basic training in Ft.Leonard Wood , Missouri his unit was sent to the South Pacific, After he returned to civilian life he moved to Jacksonville Fla. and worked in the construction industry. Lottie Attented the public school of Marion Va.  She Made her home there until her marriage to Ramond Wayne. After their Marriage  Raymond (Most people called him Wayne) worked first for the Southwest State Hospital. He then went  To Radford Va. to work at the Radford Defence Plant on leaving there he went to Kingsport, Tenn. to work in a pilot plant that was the Beginning of the Holston Defence Works. He left there and returned to Radford for the duration of WWII .  He then went to work with Burlington Industries in Burlington N.C.  in the truck maintance shop. This term in N.C.  the family lived in Gibsonville. When Burlington opened trucking opertions in Dublin,VA. Wayne was transferred there. They first lived in rental houseing until they built the house there in 1953 After several years there he was again sent to Burlington NC. This time to be in charge of  the truck maintance shop.  On this assignment they lived in Elon NC . After his retirement the family moved back to Dublin Va.. Their son Alvin, Married Edith Thompson in Dublin and both Families still make their home there.

Raymond was the second of seven chidren born to Robert S. Scofield Wayne and Maggie Lee Erwin . He was born in Madisonville, Va. And assisted his father on the farm intill he joined the ivilian Conservation Corps (CCC)  and was eventually sent to the Marion Va. Camp to help in the building ofthe Hungry Mother State Park.

After a childhood in Marion Va. where he attended the public schools,and after the death of his parents, Sam served about eighteen months in the civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) helping to add improvements to the Hungry Mother State Park. near Marion VA. In 1940 He sought Better opportunities of employment in Kingsport Tn, He worked in a cabinet shop for I.F. Thaxton before starting to work for Tennessee Eastman Company in the fiber divison Feburary 22,1941 for $0.40 an Hour.

On March 17,1942 He married Dorothy Louise Scott, the daughter of Eugene and Nora Moxley Scott. After attending public school of Marion Va, through the 8th grade Dorothy attended the Konnerock Training school for girls operated by the Lutheran Church.

After their wedding the young couple made their first home at 1209 Chestnut St. in Kingsport Tn. That summer they built the first home they would own on a lot in the J.R Pierce sub-divison a small four room house on a lot 50 by 150 ft cost $40.00 and what new material was bought cost $534,00

April he was conducted into the miltary service at Fort Oglethorpe Ga. and sent to Fort George Mead Md. for basic training subsequently moving to Fort Ethen Allen, Vermont and then to Camp Rucker , Ala.
